Pre-K- 3 and 4 Year Olds

The St. Mary’s Pre-Kindergarten has full and half day programs for both 3 and 4 year old children. Our Pre-K curriculum is both child-centered and activity-based.  Your children feel secure and happy as they spend time in both group and individual activities.

Our curriculum is aligned with the new Next Gen Learning Standards and the Diocese of Albany Catholic School standards. The curriculum is designed to stimulate each child’s mind and excite their natural questioning nature. The classroom arrangement allows the children to explore, play, imagine, and create through the following areas: block area, library area, art area, and manipulative area. All activities are age appropriate and help the child to develop academically, socially, and emotionally.  Additionally, all full day students will receive instruction in Special Areas such as: Physical Education, Music, Art and Technology.

3 Year Old Program ~ (must be 3 years old by December 1st)

The 3 year old classes now have a variety of full and half day programs to choose from. The goal of the 3 year old program is for our students to begin to develop their interpersonal skills. These skills are taught through methods such as group play, art activities, singing songs, and listening to stories.

Please Note: All students must be fully potty trained by the start of the school year. Pull-ups not accepted.  If a child as more than 3 accidents there will be a meeting with the principal and Prek director for an action plan.

4 Year Old Program ~ (must be 4 years old by December 1st)

All 4-year old programs continue to develop interpersonal skills such as sharing, listening, and following directions that were introduced in the 3-year old program. This program is specifically designed to prepare children with readiness skills for kindergarten. Our child will be exposed to curriculum in the five domains of the Common Core:

I. Approaches to learning: Engagement, creativity, imagination and initiative

II. Physical Development and Health: fine and gross motor skills, health, safety and well being.

III. Social and Emotional Development: Self Awareness, self regulation, accountability, adaptability, and motivation.

IV. Communication, Language and Literacy: Motivation, Observation, expressive and receptive language.

V. Cognition and knowledge of the world:

Our Pre-K program readies children for an easy and stress-free transition into our full day Kindergarten program in a building they are familiar with, staffed with teachers they recognize.

The children in our Pre-K program benefit from the relationships they establish with our older students. As part of our Pre-K program, 4 year old students are 'buddied' with our 8th graders who work with them on special projects like baking and crafts. They even go sledding together in the winter months. Together, both 8th graders and pre-k students learn to work and play collaboratively, enjoying the time spent with someone of a different age group.
