Pre School ~ ages 3 and 4
The St. Mary’s Pre-school has programs for both 3 and 4 year old children. The classroom is child centered and activity based. The classroom is a place where children feel secure and happy as they spend time in both group and individual activities.
Our curriculum is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards and the Diocese of Albany Catholic School standards. The curriculum is designed to stimulate each child’s mind and excite their natural questioning nature. The classroom arrangement allows the children to explore, play, imagine, and create through the following areas: block area, library area, art area, and manipulative area. All activities are age appropriate and help the child to develop academically, socially, and emotionally.
3 Year Old Program ~ (must be 3 years of age by September 1st)
The 3-year old classes meet on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s in the morning from 9 a.m.–11:30 a.m. The goal of the 3 -year old program is to have the children begin to develop their interpersonal skills. These skills are taught through methods such as group play, art activities, singing songs, and listening to stories.
4 Year Old Program ~ (must be 4 years of age by Dec. 1st)
Three program options are currently available in our 4 year old pre-kindergarten program:
- Monday through Friday (5 days) 7:30-2:30 (After school care available at an additional fee).
Instruction also includes Special areas such as Physical Education, Technology, Library, Gymnastics, English Language Arts enrichment (with IPad integration) and Mathematics Lab.
- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (3 days) 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (After care available at an additional fee).

- Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.
All 4-year old programs continue to develop interpersonal skills such as sharing, listening, and following directions that were introduced in the 3-year old program. This program is specifically designed to prepare children with readiness skills for kindergarten. Our child will be exposed to curriculum in the five domains of the Common Core:
I. Approaches to learning: Engagement, creativity, imagination and initiative
II. Physical Development and Health: fine and gross motor skills, health, safety and well being.
III. Social and Emotional Development: Self Awareness, self regulation, accountability, adaptability, and motivation.
IV. Communication, Language and Literacy: Motivation, Observation, expressive and receptive language.
V. Cognition and knowledge of the world:
Our Pre-K program readies children for an easy and stress-free transition into our Full day Kindergarten program in a building they are familiar with, staffed with teachers they recognize and know and who know them.
The children in our pre-k program benefit too from the relationships they establish with our older students. As part of our pre-k program, 4 year old students are 'buddied' with our 8th graders who work with them on special projects like baking and crafts. They even go sledding together in the winter months. Together, both 8th graders and pre-k students learn to work and play collaboratively, enjoying the time spent with someone of different age group.
